Rural Living and Fire Mitigation

The further out of town homes get, the larger the space available. Rural living is the term given when houses sit on lots of five to 40 acres. Anything above 35 acres will have a domestic well permit thanks to a change of law in Colorado in 1972.
While there are certainly benefits of rural living, especially if you don’t like being too close to people, there are also downsides. It’s important to consider them and how they affect wildfire mitigation. After all, wildfires in Colorado are a major concern.
Narrow and Steeper Paths that Urban Living
Homes in rural areas can be a problem for fire departments. The roads are much narrower and steeper than those in urban areas, making them a problem for fire trucks to get through. It’s especially a problem as residents evacuate the areas, as the fire trucks move in the opposite direction of the evacuating people.
On top of that, there are no fire hydrants around the majority of homes. In some cases, there is no surface water to use. This can make it difficult to tackle fires that are in the area, making them more likely to spread into wildfires.
More Control Over Your Own Land
The good thing about rural living is space. You have more control over the land you’re on, and you’re far enough away from most neighboring areas. A major downside of urban or even intermix living is that you can’t control what your neighbors next door do, and they usually feel like they’re living right on top of you.
This makes it possible to create a safe space around your home. You can create the wildfire buffers to help mitigate them, including turning some of the green land into parking spaces or other large pads. This is great for the fire department, too. You can create spaces for the fire trucks to easily turn around and even park up if you do have a well, making it possible for them to manage the fires that are in the local area.
Those who live in rural areas are also more likely to work together to mitigate fires anyway. Everyone knows the power of firebreaks, so you’ll find your neighbors—even those who are 40 acres or more away—will do similar work to you to reduce the risk of fires in the area.
