The home ignition zones are essential to understand when it comes to protecting your home from wildfires. You’ll not only keep you and your family safe, but you can minimize the spread of the fires.
There are four zones to consider: The Home Zone, Zone 1, Zone 2, and Zone 3.
The Home Zone
While you need to take steps to get the three other zones ready for the risk of fire, you can’t overlook your home. This is within the first five feet of your home and less, including anything on and around your patio and roof.
You’ll need to make sure the fences, decks, and porches are made of fire-resistant materials as much as possible. This is especially the case when it comes to roofs, window areas, and sidings. Whether your home was built long before you moved in or you’ve had it designed especially for you, make sure you look into the types of materials used and upgrade anything necessary.
Keep the areas clear to make sure there’s no debris for the fire to gain fuel.
Zone 1
Up to 30 feet from your home, you’ll be in Zone 1. This is where you need to put a lot of focus into the maintenance of your lawn and garden.
By keeping the lawn mowed and at a manageable height, you’ll reduce the risk of fire spreading. You’ll want to get rid of fallen debris, immediately raking leaves that fall and getting rid of weeds.
Any structures in this part of the home need to be made of non-flammable materials as much as possible.
Zone 2
The next zone is from 30 feet to 100 feet from your home. It may seem like a big distance, but it doesn’t take long for fires to spread from here. You’ll want to look at the vegetation around this part of the ground.
Clear up any flammable plant materials, including dead leaves and branches. If you have an abundance of trees or bushes, considering cutting them back and even removing some. You want spaces between the crowns of the trees. If they touch, it’s much easier for fire to spread.
Zone 3
The third zone is 100 feet to 200 feet from your home. If this isn’t on your land, then you can’t do much. However, you can talk to your neighbors or the local council, depending on who does own the land.
You want to make sure the trees are well spaced. Keep the vegetation low and spaces between the crowns of the trees. It’s likely to be Zone 2 for your neighbor, so talk to your neighbor about managing this to keep everyone’s houses free from potential damage.
By understanding the zones and the needs in each zone, you’ll be able to reduce the risk of wildfires spreading out of control and causing a danger to you and your family.
