Phase 3 of fire mitigation isn’t just another zone on your land. This part is maintenance to ensure all the work you’ve done through the first two phases remain strong.
If you do have a third zone on your property (not everyone does depending on acreage), then this phase will also cover that. If you have so much land that you have Zone 4, you’ll go into that section during this phase of fire mitigation.
Why Phase 3 of Fire Mitigation Is Important
You’ve just completed Phases 1 and 2 of fire mitigation. Right now, they look good, but what about in two- or three-years’ time? There will be a few more trees, some trees may have fallen down, and there will be new limbs that need to be pruned.
During the first two stages, you will have picked trees you thought needed removing. Now it’s time to see if the canopies are still looking good in terms of space. Is it time to remove another tree or two in the area? How did trees closer to the forest floor fare with the extra light and nutrients?
Check on Trees After Heavy Snowfall
You’ll do this third phase sooner than two or three years if you have a heavy snowfall. The winter can be a bad time of year for damage to trees. It’s important to get out to see if there are any broken limbs or snapped trunks.
Broken limbs can be pruned. If a tree has a snapped trunk, you’ll need to check in on the overall health of it. This could need removing completely. Leaving everything unattended will leave to bug infestations as the weather gets warmer, and then you’re putting more stress on the already drought-stressed trees.
You can also do work during the snowfalls or immediately after to help. Smaller trees are going to bend with the weight of the snow. If they’re under 3in in diameter, head out with a broom and knock the snow off. The bend will set within a couple of weeks if left. While some trees look great with some character, bent trunks can cause problems for the overall health of the tree.
Tackle the Bigger Projects
Did you leave some projects in Zones 1 and 2 for another time? Maybe you were thinking about putting in a stone walkway or replacing your wooden decking. Phase 3 of fire mitigation is the time to do that.
Make your home ready for firefighters. Add in a large, paved driveway for them to turn their trucks around, and consider a pond for a water source.
While you want to reduce fire fuel around the home, you’ll still need some fire-resistant shrubs and trees. This is a good phase to start planting them. Opt for lilacs, sumacs, aspens, and elms to create a diverse space that is less prone to fires.
