What Is Firewise Community?

The population of America is growing considerably. In fact, that’s the case for the entire world. With the growing population comes the growing risk of more wildfires. You know the danger of wildfires and the long-term damage they cause. Preventing them is essential, and this is where the Firewise Community comes into play.

Firewise Communities help with the mitigation of wildfires. They help get families ready for the disaster and take steps to prevent wildfires spreading. Firewise communities of Douglas county include:

  • Antler’s at Sageport
  • Bell Mountain Ranch
  • Woodlands and Escavera
  • Greater Perry Pines
  • The Timbers at the Pinery
  • Perry Park
  • PineRidge
  • Ponderosa Hills
  • The Pinery
  • The Ridge at Castle Pines Village
  • Roxborough Park
  • Spruce Mountain Estates
  • The hidden Forest
  • Valley Park. These are just some of firewise communities throughout Colorado.

Practical Steps to Prevent Wildfires

We all wonder if there’s anything we can do. There are wildfire mitigation steps that we can take to protect property while also preventing the spread of the fire. The Firewise Communities help you do that, offering practical steps, including through landscaping and the construction of your own home.

These communities help the local individuals and get a community together as a group. They encourage people to do their part to reduce the chances of fire.

Working With Knowledge and Expertise

A Firewise Community isn’t created by someone who has just read about creating defensible systems online. The program is part of the National Wildland/Urban Interface Fire Program. It’s sponsored by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group’s Wildland/Urban Interface Working Team, as well as a number of other organizations within the group.

The USDA Forest Service, the USDI Fish & Wildlife Service, the USDI National Park Service, and the International Association of Fire Chiefs are all among the groups that sponsor the program. The idea is that people get information that actually works, making homes safer and protecting the lives of firefighters.

Firewise Programs

There is a variety of programs available through the Firewise Community. You can visit the Firewise website at firewise.org to get the latest firewise recourses and tips.

These programs help to plan ahead for fires and maintain current situations and landscapes. The following programs are among the list of options:

• Firewise Communities/USA Recognition Program: allowing small communities to create and implement plans that will protect their local area and gain recognition status for their jobs.
• Firewise Communities Workshops: helping people understand how to landscape, the best tools for managing debris, practical help to mitigate fires.

The website also offers resources for both training and education to make sure you’re aware of the recent steps in mitigating wildfires. There’s also a community support section, helping communities come together.

If you’re in a wildfire-prone zone, you’ll want to turn to the Firewise Community. Protect your space and your town.
