Fire Mitigation Checklist

Forest needing to be thinned out

Fire mitigation checklist are steps that will help you protect your home during a wildfire. A lot of houses in Douglas county as well as along Colorado foothills are located in a high-risk zone for wildfires and part of wildland-urban interface.. It is imperative for homeowners to do fire mitigation work. These measures will increase the chance of your home’s survival during a wildfire. They will also reduce the fuels around your home by creating a defensible space. Defensible space is the area around your house and other structures on your property that has been modified to reduce fire hazard.

Fire Mitigation Checklist for Defensible Space Creation:

  • Thinning and pruning trees and shrubs
  • Creating fire breaks
  • Reduce surface fuels under the trees
  • Removing slash from clean-up and any down debris
  • Grass and weeds mowing shorter than 6 inches
  • Raking pine needles and twigs away from your house
  • Removing dead and diseases trees
  • Getting rid of the branches that overhand the roof and chimney
  • Cleaning roof, gutters from pine needles
  • Making sure your driveway is wide enough for emergency vehicles
  • Do not store firewood and other flammable material close to the house

We live in a changing forest and some of these steps like mowing and gutter cleaning needed to be performed several times a year. Others such as removing dead scrub oak and trees can be assessed once a year. Do the best that you can or hire tree care crew if needed.

Being prepared in case of a wildfire:

  • Having evacuation plan, smoke detectors, and fire extinguishers
  • Making sure your phone number is on the emergency notification list
  • Having disaster supply kit ready to go
