You can follow these tips to create a defensible space that you’re proud of afterwards. In zone one, do the following:

• Remove the dead plants and weeds
• Remove the dry leaves and pine needles (don’t forget the gutters)
• Trim back branches to keep them 10 feet away from others
• Remove overhanging branches, especially those close to your roof or chimney
• Move woodpiles for firewood to zone two
• Prune (or remove if possible) the flammable flora from close to your windows
• Keep patio furniture, swing sets, etc. away from trees and shrubbery.

In zone two (30 to 100 feet):
• Mow annually to avoid grass reaching 4 inches higher or more
• Create horizontal and vertical spacing between shrubs, trees, grass, etc.
• Remove all the fallen leaves, twigs, cones, etc.

In zone three:
Within 100 to 200 feet from your property, reduce density of the trees, scrub oak and shrubs. Prune tall trees so their tops do not touch. Remove small trees that can act as fire fuels.
