A hundred years of putting out fires built this fuel bed
The overgrown, tinder-dry forests that worry everyone on the Front Range aren't natural. We made them, one extinguished campfire and one suppressed lightning strike at a time, over a century of good intentions. Understanding that is the first step to fixing it.

If you could stand on a Front Range ridge in 1870 and look at the ponderosa forest, you might not recognize it as a forest at all. You'd see big, widely spaced trees, their trunks bare of branches for the first fifteen or twenty feet, and between them open ground: grass, wildflowers, room to ride a horse at a trot without weaving. Old photographs and tree-ring records tell us this consistently. The historic ponderosa forest was open and park-like, and it stayed that way because low-intensity fire moved through it every decade or two, clearing out seedlings and deadfall without ever climbing into the crowns of the big trees.
Now stand in most of that same country today and you're in a thicket. Trees packed three, five, sometimes ten times as densely as they were, a tangle of thin "doghair" pine, dead wood piled on the ground, low branches and scrub forming a continuous ladder from the soil to the canopy. It looks lush. It is, in fact, a forest in poor health and a fuel bed primed to explode. And the reason for the change is almost entirely us.
The fires that used to do this work
Ponderosa pine didn't just tolerate frequent fire, it depended on it. Thick bark let mature trees shrug off low flames. Those regular ground fires killed the crop of seedlings that sprouted between them, so only a few made it to maturity in each opening, keeping the forest naturally thinned. The fires cleared deadfall before it could pile up, recycled nutrients into the soil, and kept scrub and ladder fuel from ever building a continuous path to the canopy. This wasn't disaster; it was maintenance. The forest and the fire were partners, and the partnership kept the whole system open, resilient, and hard to burn catastrophically.
Native peoples understood this and set fires deliberately to keep the country open for game and travel. For thousands of years, frequent low fire was simply how these forests worked. Then, in a historical blink, we stopped it.
A century of good intentions
After catastrophic fire seasons in the early 1900s, American policy hardened into a simple rule: put out every fire, fast, everywhere. For most of a century that's exactly what we did, and we got good at it. Every extinguished lightning strike and doused campfire felt like a win. But each small fire we prevented was a small thinning that didn't happen. The seedlings that a ground fire would have cleared grew up instead, all of them, crowding in between the old giants. Deadfall that would have burned off every fifteen years just accumulated. Scrub and low branches built the ladder that open forests never had.
Multiply that across a hundred years and you get the forests we have now: not the product of neglect, but the product of a century of active, well-meaning intervention. We didn't let these forests get dangerous. We carefully made them that way, one saved acre at a time, and the fuel that should have burned off in a hundred small fires is all still out there, waiting to come out in one big one.
Why overgrown also means unhealthy
The crowding isn't just a fire problem, it's a health problem, and the two feed each other. On the semi-arid Front Range, water is the limiting resource, and a stand packed with too many trees means every tree is fighting for a share that isn't there. Water-stressed trees grow weak, and weak trees are exactly what bark beetles hunt; a vigorous ponderosa can pitch out an attacking beetle, a drought-stressed one can't. So overgrown stands don't just carry more fuel, they generate more, as beetle-killed and drought-killed trees turn to standing dead timber. A dense forest is a sick forest, and a sick forest is a more flammable one. The problems compound.
What restoration actually restores
You can't bring back a hundred years of missing fire with a match, not safely, not next to homes. So we do mechanically what those small fires used to do. Forest restoration thins the stand back toward its historic spacing: out come the crowded small-diameter stems, the ladder fuel, and the dead standing timber, while the mature, vigorous trees stay and finally get room. A forestry mulcher grinds the removed material into a layer of mulch that feeds the soil and holds moisture, instead of leaving it as slash. What's left is a forest that looks and works the way it did before we broke it, open, resilient, and something a fire can move through without leveling.
The trees that remain get more water and more light, which makes them stronger against both fire and beetles. Grass and wildflowers return to the opened ground. And critically, the spacing between crowns breaks the fire's fastest path, so a blaze that would have roared through the old thicket as an unstoppable crown fire drops to the ground, where it's survivable and where crews can actually fight it. On larger parcels this is the same work as forest thinning and fuel reduction, seen from the angle of health rather than fire; they're two names for undoing the same century of buildup.
It's worth being clear-eyed about scale, too. No one is proposing to hand-thin every acre of the Front Range, and machines alone won't undo a century everywhere at once. But around homes, along the roads and ridges where fire threatens people, and across the private acreage that makes up so much of the wildland-urban interface, mechanical thinning is the tool that fits. It's precise, it's fast, and unlike prescribed fire it can work safely right up against structures on a calm winter day. It buys the time and the safety margin that lets the bigger landscape conversation happen.
The good news in a hard story
Here's the encouraging part. If we built this problem on purpose, we can un-build it on purpose, and we know exactly how, because we're just imitating a process the forest ran on its own for millennia. Restoration isn't a gamble or a guess; it's giving the land back the structure it had and thrived in. It won't happen across the whole Front Range at once, but it happens one property at a time, and every treated parcel is a firebreak and a healthier patch of forest that makes its whole neighborhood safer.
