There are many reasons to want to remove scrub oak from your land or surrounding areas. They can be troublesome shrubs that get in the way and can be a wildfire hazard. It is important to identify exactly what scrub oak is and understand why you want to remove scrub oak in areas such as Roxborough Park.
What Does Scrub Oak Look Like?
Scrub oak is a small shrub-like tree with grey bark that darkens with age. The bark becomes thick and furrowed over time with reddish-brown twigs, which are hairy with scaly buds clustered on the end.
The leaves are between 3 to 6 inches in size. They are shiny green on top and pale and hairy below. The leaves also turn red and yellow in Autumn. Among the leaves, you will find tiny flowers without petals. The male leaves are found in pendulous clusters and the females are solitary or can be found in small clusters.
A form of acorn can grow on scrub oak, with an egg-shaped nut in a small shallow-like cup, brown in nature.
Scrub oaks can be found in the southern Rocky Mountains, growing on slopes and areas of elevation up to 10,000 feet. The gambel oak can form a dense monoculture, which means that it dominates as a single crop in a specific area. Scrub oaks can be found in Roxborough Park in many areas dominating the surrounding areas.
Why Would You Want To Remove Scrub Oak in Roxborough Park?
1. Fire mitigation. Creating firebreaks are very important in areas susceptible to wildfires. Removing brush can limit the ‘fuel’ for a wildfire to keep burning and therefore slow down or even stop a raging wildfire.
2. Building a fence. Creating a barrier around your land is very important, to keep out animals or even people if needs be. Scrub oak can often get in the way, so removal is very much needed to carry out essential work.
3. Building a new house. You may have a piece of land you would like to build on, but the scrub oak is in the way. You have to remove the scrub oak properly and from the roots if you are looking to build your next home on the resulting land.
4. Scrub oak pruning. This one isn’t exactly removing the gambel oak but cutting it back for aesthetic reasons or for practical reasons (if you are trying to clear a path for example)
5. To make sure no critters are hiding inside. All types of animals like to hang out in scrub oak. Some of these can be, at best, annoying and at worst, deadly. So, removing scrub oak from your close vicinity is very beneficial.
