Evacuation Kit In Case of Wildfire
A “bug out bag” is a great way to make sure you’re prepared in an emergency, regardless of what that emergency is. The idea is that you have enough to survive three days.
The term “bug out bag” has been used a lot by preppers, who are getting ready for a apocalyptic disaster. However, they are great to have for normal emergencies as water and power grids can go down for some time.
Who Should Have a Bug Out Bag
It’s worth it for everyone to have a bug out bag since you don’t know when an emergency will happen. However, if you’re in the Red Zone, you’re more likely to face a wildfire emergency that can lead to an evacuation order. You definitely need an evacuation kit.
Grab a duffel or a suitcase, something that is easy to carry. A bug out bag needs to be something that you can just grab and go, so they are spares of everything. This includes medication if you can. If you can’t have spare medication, always make sure that is ready to go at home so you can throw it in and get out.
What You Need in Your Evacuation Kit
Your kit should include the following items:
• Long pants
• Long-sleeved tops
• Underwear
• Shorts
• 2-3 t-shirts
• Socks
• Contact lenses, case, solution
• Medications, including basic Tylenol or Advil
• Deodrant
• Toothbrush and toothpaste
• Snacks and water bottles
• A book/card game/travel game
• At least $50 in cash
The evacuation kit is to get you out of the initial situation. You’re not hunkering down anywhere. You’re simply getting to a hotel for a few days until the worst is over.
When You Need a Disaster Kit
A disaster kit is something you need when there is a serious disaster. If you live in an area with hurricanes, earthquakes, and other similar situations, you will need to have a disaster kit on hand. This will mean having food that will last three days.
As well as the above, you’ll need:
• A can opener
• 3 gallons of water per person
• AM/FM radio with batteries
• Flashlight
• First-aid kit
• Whistle
• Sanitary supplies, including garbage bags, sanitary products, toilet paper, etc.
• A wrench
• Spare batteries
You may want to consider a shotgun or a pistol with ammunition. Only have these if you are willing to train with them and train anyone who is around them.
