Wildfires continue to be a major concern for much of the world, especially in Colorado. The best thing you can do is to mitigate for wildfires, but this can get expensive. With the cost of living going up, more and moredouglas-county-fire-mitigation-cost-sharing-program people are looking to save money.

The problem is saving money by not mitigating for wildfires isn’t a way to save money. It’s going to cost more in the future, and it puts a lot of lives in danger. Douglas County recognizes that, which is why it’s looking at ways to help with the costs. One of those is by bringing in a cost-share program.

Douglas County’s Wildfire Mitigation Cost-Share Program

The cost-share program was introduced in 2023, and it became an immediate hit. It also became a success in the amount of work that was done. The program helped to reduce wildfire fuels across more than 80 properties, covering 700+ acres of land.

How Much Will Douglas County Cover?

Douglas County is willing to share 50% of the financial burden of wildfire mitigation. Yes, there is a small catch in that it is up to $5,000.

The type of mitigation is to create defensible space and reduce the hazards that have been linked to the growing issue of wildfires. The aim is to also make a community more resilient, as well as safer, against wildfires.

How and When to Apply for the Program

You will need to apply for the Wildfire Mitigation Cost-Share program. The deadline is April 20, 2024.

There is limited funding, so not all projects will be approved. This is a competitive application process. This year, there is a focus on the Wildland Urban Interface, which is where developed land meets natural habitat.

People will hear in May if they have been accepted.

If you don’t manage to get the application in or you weren’t accepted, there will be a second application period. There is no date set just yet, but it is going to be sometime in the summer.
