Fire Wrap and External Sprinkler Systems
There are issues with some fire prevention options. Gels and foams just don’t last that long, and you’re not there to keep on top of keeping them hydrated. You need something that will offer protection for days or weeks while you have been evacuated.
Fire wraps are great for this. They are as they sound: a wrap for the home. You can also opt for external sprinkler systems.
Fire Wraps to Protect the Home
Fire wraps offer aluminized glass fabric that creates a barrier against the fires. As the fire gets closer, the material will shield the home from around 95% of the heat.
It is possible to cover the whole building within half a day for the standard cabin or home. You don’t even need power or water to get it done. However, it is a dangerous task as it involves climbing onto roofs and up ladders.
You’ll need staples to keep the wrap on the side of the home. Another option is high-temperature tape. Staples tend to protect from the heat and don’t succumb to any high winds, though.
Look out for Firezat Fire Shield, where you’ll get a 5ft by 50ft or a 12ft by 60ft roll for around $750. The great thing is that the wrap is reusable, which protects the environment in other ways. You will need between three and six roles for the whole building in most cases.
External Sprinkler Systems
Another option is to get a sprinkler system. The inside of buildings have these because they are effective. Well, you can get external options as well. As long as you have water pressure, you’ll be able to use the sprinkler system, and you can set it up to turn on when you’ve evacuated.
You want to make sure you use the system before the fire gets there. This makes sure the roof, gutters, decks, and other surrounding elements are already damp, helping to limit the chances of the fire spreading.
You can get Roof Saver Sprinklers, which sit on the peek of the roof without the needs for anchor weights or screws. You can get them for around $180 each, and each one will cover around 100ft in a circle. Depending on the size of the house, you’ll need several for full coverage.
Wildfire Sprinkler is another company to look into. They have a propane-powered pump and can cover 60 gallons per minute. The system on its own is around $7,500, but you’ll need the full installation package.
The downside is the need for a water supply. If you don’t have the pressure, whether it’s from location or due to power failing, you won’t have the water to protect against the fire. You can also find that the fire department asks that you not use them due to everyone trying to put out fires in the local area. In this case, you’ll need other protective options.
